loving the album cover
I had a million more things to say about David Bowie that I regrettably had to leave out of my most recent 3QD item. One thing I wanted to say about his output in the 1980's was that Tonight (1984) is one of the great album/cover mismatches: I love the cover but find the album mediocre. Which got me thinking: what are some other albums whose covers are far better than anything inside? Here is my question to you, Reader: what is your favourite album cover for a bad album?
Labels: David Bowie

I find to an amazing, even suspicious extent that the quality of an album cover often precisely reflects the quality of the music therein. For example, all Dylan's sleeve art up to Slow Train Coming and all of Springsteen's up to Tunnel of Love is beautiful and iconic, and those records coincide with the points at which those artists stopped producing unfailingly major work.
But while it's nevertheless easy enough to think of decent albums with horrible art (Dylan's Saved, perhaps the worst ever LP cover from a major artist, springs to mind), I find it much harder to match your Tonight example.
But I would nominate Morrissey's Kill Uncle (1990): a beautifully conceived photograph, well-executed, rich with poetry, adorning a miserably thin and uninspired collection of tuneless dreck.

What, in this context, does one say about the Beatles' White Album?
